“International Directors’ Seminar

for Children’s and Young People’s Theatre”

Oldenburg, Germany, June 12th-18th, 2017

Dear colleagues,

the International Directors’ Seminar invites directors of theatre for young audiences from all over the world to share their ideas. In the past 40 years ASSITEJ Germany has welcomed almost 500 directors at theaters in 13 German cities. A list of all participants and themes can be found here: www.assitej.de/regieseminar.

We now have the pleasure to inform you about the upcoming International Directors’ Seminar for Children’s and Young People’s Theatre 2017.

The International Directors’ Seminar will take place in Oldenburg in co-operation with theater wrede+. theater wrede+ is an independent theatre which produces and hosts shows for young audiences in the northern German city of Oldenburg (www.theaterwrede.de / https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldenburg_(Oldenburg)).

In 2017 the International Directors’ Seminar will once again focus on a specific topic of interest to theatre directors from all over the world. Designed for about 25 participants, this seminar will investigate the theme of

Streets and Crossroads

Streets exist everywhere in the world. People meet in the streets, they perform in streets, some live their lives in the streets and others see life as a journey where every crossroads means a decision.

Streets can be markets, they can be noisy or quiet, they can be stages for the dramas and the richness of life. They can be places for poverty and spending, for music and movement, for power and progress, for endless possibilities and uncrossable barriers.

Streets are public spaces where political ideas are voiced, where protest is made visible, where power relations are questioned and challenged, where people join forces to express what is important to them.

The idea of streets from different directions meeting at a crossroads and creating an open space, is our starting point for this years’ International Directors’ Seminar.

The International Directors’ Seminar 2017 aims to discuss and dramatize questions and connotations of “Streets and Crossroads” thematically and artistically. From 12 – 18 of June 2017 the participants will work practically in small groups, based on the seminar’s theme and the participants’ experience. A multitude of ideas and perspectives as well as directing approaches can be developed by a diverse group of participants. Theatre performances by the host theatre and other local companies as well as leisure activities will accompany and complete the daily work of the seminar.

We are looking forward to an inspiring exchange!

The seminar wishes to address directors of children’s and young people’s theatre who have recently given new impulses and set new standards. The seminar’s language is English, so all participants must be able to understand and speak English.

Up to 20 directors from all over the world will be invited to participate, as well as up to five directors from German speaking countries.

ASSITEJ Germany and the hosting theatre as the organizers of the International Directors’ Seminar will bear the costs for accommodation, catering, theatre tickets, and leisure activities for all participants.

For more details do not hesitate to contact Ms. Meike Fechner who is in charge of the International Director’s Seminar for ASSITEJ Germany.
